Abstract

 The aim of this study was to determine the quality of frozen Landrace boar semen in watermelon juice with various concentrations of ethylene glycol in a citrate extender. Fresh semen from four 2–3-year-old Landrace boars was collected using the gloved-hand method, evaluated macroscopically and microscopically, and then diluted in a base extender. The semen was stored at 24–25°C for 2 hours and centrifuged (3000 rpm, 15 minutes). The sperm pellet was rediluted (1:1) and supplemented with ethylene glycol at concentrations of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1%. The mixture was homogenized, placed into test tubes, aliquoted into 0.5 mL straws, equilibrated at 3–5°C, frozen over liquid nitrogen for 10 minutes, and stored at approximately -196°C for 24 hours. The results showed that different concentrations of ethylene glycol had no significant effect on frozen semen quality. It was concluded that variations in ethylene glycol concentration in the modified citrate–watermelon juice extender did not produce significantly different results.
